Steven M. Murow
Career
Steven M. Murow has been a professional in the general engineering and building contracting industry for over forty-five years. He began his career in 1978 as a quantity takeoff estimator for Sukut Construction, Inc. After studying Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois and Cal State Long Beach, he co-founded Gillespie Construction and CME Corporation in 1981, serving as a principal in both companies.
In May 1987, Murow joined Greg Clayton as a principal and formed Clayton Engineering, Inc., where he served as Executive Vice President until October 2000. During this time, he was responsible for estimating over 3,500 bids, managing over 400 projects worth over $250 million, and overseeing various aspects of the company's operations.
From October 2000 to 2012, Murow worked with The Moote Group, providing expertise in developing pro formas, mass grading analysis, bid packages, and project management. He also assisted in construction claim analysis, litigation support, and expert witness services.
Expert Witness and Consulting
Murow has been retained as an expert witness in over 300 matters, attended over 100 mediations, and has been deposed on 68 occasions and testified in court/arbitration/federal report 38 times. His expert services relate to earthwork, site development, and general engineering contracting matters throughout the United States.
Some notable projects Murow has been involved in include cost estimating, bid analysis, and contract negotiations for the City of Laguna Beach's Treasure Island Development; reviewing and analyzing contracts, claims, and serving as an expert witness for the City of West Hollywood's Santa Monica Blvd. Reconstruction project; and serving as an expert in various litigation matters involving grading, billing practices, and construction defects.
Current Ventures
In July 2012, Murow began providing expert witness and litigation support services through his entity DIRTONU, Inc. He also operates MUROWICM, which serves as the construction oversight consultant for the 20-year build-out of Rancho Mission Viejo, providing bid administration and construction management services for various developers and builders.
Murow is also the managing partner of Pacific Coast Engineering Contractors LLC, where he serves as the Senior Project Manager overseeing several Construction Management-at-Risk (G-Max contracts) and General Contracting projects in various locations in California.
Professional Affiliations and Activities
Murow has held leadership positions in various professional organizations, including serving as the President of the Orange County Forensic Expert Witness Association (FEWA), the National President of the FEWA National Board of Directors, and the President of the American Society of Professional Estimators - Chapter 3. He is also a member of several industry associations, such as the Building Industry Association (BIAOC), HomeAid OC, the Engineering Contractors Association (ECA), the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), and others.
